Weekly update: Dollar Bowling (+ Dollar Drinks) x2 and other assorted events.

Sorry it’s been a while since I updated. I blame Facebook, which JoelC reminded me yesterday about the time he said:

“Hey Eric you heard of Facebook?”

And I said “Yeah I went on once or twice it’s kind of lame”

And he said “Yeah I’m with you” then deleted his account.

But ever since I uploaded the Malaysia pics about two weeks ago (because my free Flickr account is almost maxed out), and finally bothered to add the rest of my cousins, and other people I know, it’s been hard for me to stop going back. That, and they have a pretty evil Bejeweled game, that I can’t seem to stop playing.

Anyway, this past weekend went fairly well. It wasn’t a rager like the few weekdays before it. We went downtown on Friday night, and again on Saturday, and I ate saimin and zippy’s chili again.

On Sunday night, we met up with Reid for dollar bowling/dollar drinks down at the SouthPoint Casino. We had about 16 cups of PBR and I got blasted!

There we are. That’s me drinking one of the $1-dollar Pabsts’ and Kerri trying to steal mah drank.

For some reason, I ended up going home with Reid instead of with Kerri. We ate at In-N-Out burger for lunch the next day, and for the rest of the time, I sat around watching G4 TV’s coverage of ComicCon. It was good times.

Except that for the next several days, my thumb hurt, and (don’t ask me why) so did my inner thighs.

Of course that didn’t stop us from going back again last night. Woo!! My thumb hurts even more now. The thighs are okay though (again, don’t ask me why they hurt. I have no idea. Maybe I run funny with the ball or throw it weird?)

In other news, I just finished reading The Numbers Game, and left feeling underwhelmed. I guess if I never paid attention in high school stats, it would have been a more eye opening experience. But whatever.

I’m reading The Wauchula Woords Accord next, though. That one should be good. It’s about the Human-animal link.

Thursday night hijinks: A Russian bar, Country bar, and a guy named Chuck Norris.

Last night one of the cocktail waitresses at Reid’s club was celebrating her birthday, and I tagged along. En route, we stopped by the house of one of the bartenders. He’s this huge white guy named Chuck. We had a few Millers over at his place with his two roomates.

About 20 minutes later, I found out his last name is Norris.

“Dude that is cool,” I said. “And that’s all I’ll say, because you would have already heard anything else” (and yes, I did want to ask if they’re called earth-downs instead of push-ups when he does them).

So we head out to this Russian restaurant called Matryoshka, which turns into a club at night. We hung out for a bit.

Later in the night, Chuck Norris says that we should go to a country bar.

“You ever been to a Country bar, Eric?” He says.

“What? What the hell is that?” I ask. I mean, I’m assuming it’s a bar that played country music, but I’ve never heard of it before.

Reid tells me that he’s gone once before. “It’s the craziest thing,” he says, “there’s times where everybody lines up and dances the exact same two-step!”

I need to see this for myself. So 15 minutes later, we’re pulling up to a place called Stoney’s, that’s in a place called “The Antique Mall of America”. Neither of which I knew even existed. The sign for Stoney’s was in neon, with the name framed in a huge shape of Texas state.

We walk in. The place is huge. Again, the place is huge. If I had to draw some sort of comparison, I’d say the place is about the size of a hollowed out Long’s drug store back in Hawaii. There are two bars on either side of the place, the dance floor and mechanical bull are on one end, and on the other end are beer pong, video games, three or four small bowling lanes, and the bathrooms. The waitresses and dancers all wear black leather bikinis and chaps, and there are about three huge metal tubs full of ice and beer so you can still buy a drink if you’re too far away from either of the bars.

Okay so, I mentioned the place was huge, right? The place was also packed. Full of white people, and a few black people. And me and Reid, who were the only two asians there.

My mouth was wide open. I was still trying to get a grip when the first country song started playing.

It was like everyone was paid to do this, but in front of my eyes, the entire dance floor (which itself was the size of the entire area of some clubs) rearranged, you know like those huge people-formations they did in the Beijing Olympics? And everybody did the same dance. They took the same number of steps in the same direction, they all jumped at the same time, clapped at the same time, and turned to face the same direction at the same time.

Needless to say, I was overwhelmed. I felt like I was in another dimension! The next few hours were basically me staring at the dance floor with my mouth open, with Reid, who was also having a blast and could not stop laughing the entire night, and Chuck Norris, who towered over us and seemed pretty entertained about how amazed we were.

Get this - different songs have their own different dances, too. Some look like the electric slide, but there’s another one where people start going around in a huge circle.

I couldn’t take it any more and asked these two fat chicks how the hell everybody knows what to do.

“I’m not sure if you can tell, but I’m Asian.” I said. “This is my first time here, I’m still blown away and feel like the time I went with my ex girlfriend to Catholic mass, everybody started speaking in unison, and I didn’t know what the hell was going on. Where does everybody learn all of this?”.

They told me that if you actually come earlier, like around 7:30, they have lessons, and with some songs, the DJ actually calls out the steps. Apparently, there’s also another Stoney’s up in North Las Vegas.

We got out of there a few hours later, when things started to die down. I told Chuck that my mind was blown open and I was exposed to new worlds, like I just watched an entire day’s worth of Discovery Channel.

At 4am, we were back at Reid’s place, watching TV in his living room. I was eating soft taco’s from Del Taco and Reid found “Pound Puppies” on TV and blasted the volume up to 80 (max is 100). Lori woke up and was not amused. Or maybe she was a little. I don’t know.

I crashed again on their aero bed, and got home around noon. Lucky for me, Reid doesn’t start work until about noon so he can just drop me off on the way over. I just finished eating oats again for lunch, and as I predicted last night, I’m now sitting here today, questioning everything I saw and wondering if it was all just a loud, crazy, awesome nightmare.

The end.
(ps: after Wednesday night’s hijinks, I realized that I needed to take it easy and drank a lot less this time around, which is why I was able to remember last night’s events in greater detail).

Wednesday night hijinks.

We met up with Reid and Lori last night for dinner at the Yardhouse. Afterwards, Reid and I went to a club called Revolution over at the Mirage. I don’t remember much; we drank a bunch, I clinked glasses with a guy and broke his glass with my beer bottle and had to buy him another drink. I also danced with a couple of black people and danced with a big black girl, then her really big scary looking husband came over, and I danced with him a little, shouted “all right! minorities!” and highfived him.

I vaguely remember someone taking a picture of us together. I have no idea who those people are and will never see them again but they’ll remember me as the skinny little yellow kid who started dancing with them. Later in the night, the guy got tired of dancing with his wife or something and made me dance with her again.

We caught a cab back home to Reid’s place. I just woke up a few hours ago and I’m still here now. I’m slightly hung over and have the chills. I have no idea where Reid lives, and I think he’s still asleep. But I think he’s supposed to start work soon? I better go and try to wake him up. That guy’s my ride home.

Damn this dessert heat.

This is what we’re up for this week:

At least it looks like things are going to cool down some on Friday! ALL RIGHT! (not).

Back in Vegas.

So I’m back in Vegas now. And I finally got around to posting up the Malaysia pictures. Since my free Flickr account is almost maxed out, I ended up just throwing them all on Facebook, which I (used to) hardly ever visit. While I was on Facebook, I also got around to adding the rest of my cousins and some of my old high school classmates.

And now I can’t stop going back on that godforsaken site.

It’s been so bad that I haven’t really even felt like updating this blog. It’s not like I’m even posting any kind of updates there, either though. But anyway… here are just a couple of photos:

This is an old photo I found in my Uncle’s house. Back in the early 80’s, my uncle came to visit us in Hawaii. That’s him in the photo, with me and my sister. I’m the one with no pants on. Playa from day one!

That’s a group shot with a bunch of my cousins and uncles and aunts after a celebration lunch for my cousin’s wedding. My brother’s in the red, throwing the shocker. So juvenile!

Evan and I at the Petronas Towers Skybridge. My Uncle and Aunt took us there before 9am to get tickets, and the earliest visit we could get wasn’t until 5:30pm!

Petronas Towers

Dude, this is THE very bike that I learned how to ride on at my cousin’s house over 15 years ago! I was surprised they still had that thing lying around! Still looks good, too! (well, kinda).

Wanna see more? Here’s Part 1 and Here’s Part 2.

Last day in Hawaii.

I fly back up to Vegas in about five hours. The last two weeks in Hawaii have been productive in the day, and a lot of fun at night.

I got to watch Shakedown perform last night (aka DT2.0) and they rock as usual. Kerry, Dennis, Joel and Joel, great seeing you guys again. Matt and Kai, great to meet you!

I still haven’t recapped a lot of things yet, and I’ll try working on them once I get back to Vegas, where my schedule’s going to be a little less hectic.

In the meantime, I guess I should start packing.

Food at night.

I swung by Jazz Minds last night to watch Ikaika and his band play. It ended up a night of good music with a little added shot-taking and beer drinking.

I left the place around 1 and stopped by Zippy’s afterwards for a mushroom omelette, which is pretty much the only thing I ever get from there. The Kahala Zippy’s was full of dressed up kids and they apparently shut down the dining room at night now. I guess times is tough.

As good as it was, my omelette cost me about six bucks. Back in Malaysia, that’d buy you half a dozen char kway teows!

I never bothered to look, but they have char kway teow videos up on youtube. What the hell can’t you find up there these days?

When we were in Badasia, I asked my relatives to take me to eat char kway teow whenever possible. Just watching this video makes me salivate:

White-hairs episode of the day.

so today i walk over to my mom and hold up a pair of tweezers in front of me.
“what’s taht?” she says
“I need you to pluck out a white hair” i say, while i bend down in front of her.
she starts laughing
and she’s like “I can’t see it”
“it’s right there! like right in the front? You don’t see it”
i feel tweezer’s plucking hairs
“ow! you just plucked two hairs out!”
“sorry! okay wait i think i got it…is this it?”
i look and it’s a white hair..i think.
“thanks mom”
then i go back to the bathroom
AND THE WHITE HAIR IS STILL THERE
my mom plucked out like three hairs
and in the end i still had to pluck the actual hair out by myself.

(hi everyone, I’m drunk! And awake at 3.30am. Assbackwards jetlag strikes again!!)

Assbackwards jetlag: a followup

Remember how I slept all through Saturday night, and then all through yesterday? And remember how I was worried about how it’d affect me tonight?

Well, it’s about 2:41am. And sure enough, I can’t sleep. Weird assbackwards jetlag has indeed struck again. This is going to be a long night….or morning, rather.

Weird assbackwards jetlag strikes again

For probably the first time since we got back last Monday, I was able to fall asleep before midnight last night. I woke up shortly before 7 though, and Evan and I went to Church with mom. I got back a little after 10 and fixed myself some lunch.

It was a good sleep last night, but for some reason, after lunch today, I fell asleep again. And I just woke up - about five hours later.

I don’t know what this is going to mean for me when I try to sleep tonight. I’ve really got to work on my sleeping schedule.
